Well now, isn’t that the big question!

So, we are pretty sure that the universe was created during a thing called the Big Bang. The Big Bang was a result of all the matter (stuff) in the universe being compressed together into a tiny, super-dense point in space. At some point, a reaction happened and all the matter exploded outwards to give us the known universe. Scientists are very, very sure that something like this happened.

So the next big question is, where did all that matter come from in the first place? This is what the Large Hadron Collider was invented to discover. It was built in order to test for the existence of a particle called the Higgs Boson which can explain the creation of matter. Amazingly, the scientists involved in that project were able to prove the existence of this particle. At this point, you need to as a real physicist about exactly what the Higgs Boson is, but it’s an amazing discovery.

There still isn’t a complete answer to this question yet, but researchers are always studying, learning and gradually converging on what might be the correct answer.
