Gary Munnelly answered on 12 Nov 2018:

My parents really encouraged me to study science when I was a kid because they wanted me to get a good job when I grew up. At the time, I liked individual science projects that I thought were cool. Like, I loved that you could burst a bag by mixing vinegar and baking soda, but I never really cared about the underlying chemical reaction that made this work.

I was a lot older (mid to late teens) before I started to really take an interest in why science works.

I think it is most important to be able to play with science from a young age. If you enjoy the results you get from your experiments as a kid, then you’ll start to think about how they work when you get older.
